The Vancouver region is in line for Cdn $2 billion in transit improvements—including preliminary work on a new subway and first steps on an LRT already designated as a PPP—after regional politicians found financing.
The regional mayors have been looking for a politically acceptable way of raising money after losing a referendum in 2015 to raise taxes to start an extensive transit expansion. In late November, the mayors and TransLink, the regional transit agency, approved a plan to raise Cdn $1.3 billion for transit, from “modest” property tax and transit fare increases, TransLink’s existing money sources, cost savings and efficiencies.
