New San Diego Border Crossing

The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) and the California Department of Transportation announced the receipt of $49.3 million in federal FASTLANE grant money, which will go towards building a new segment of State Route 11 near the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. The new construction is part of the Otay Mesa East Port of Entry toll project, which aims to provide an average wait time of 20 minutes, significantly lower than the average 5 hour wait time at other ports of entry. The grant also includes funding for the construction of connectors to the South Bay Expressway, which was purchased by SANDAG after it went bankrupt when owned by a Macquarie fund. The Otay Mesa East Port of Entry is expected to open in 2017.
