I would like to focus a few words on how do we pay for our infrastructure. In particular I want to address the oft-stated notion that the “gas tax is dead”. I am not convinced of its death. To date we have not seen an alternative that provides features that the gas tax provides which include efficiency of collection, privacy, costs proportional (with some carve-outs) generally to miles we travel and wear/tear we cause on the roadway system and incentives to utilize less petroleum ( with its environmental and national security implications). We can cure the gas tax by taking alternative approaches to electric and other alternately propelled vehicles such that they pay their fair share.
