Skanska/Kiewit jv passes on Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel bidding

The joint venture of Skanska and Kiewit withdrew from the bidding for the $3.6-billion expansion of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel in Virginia last month, leaving two other shortlisted teams still in the running. Skanska/Kiewit had submitted qualifications for an immersed-tube tunnel construction method for the new four-lane tube connecting Hampton and Norfolk. The other two short-listed bidders—teams led by Fluor Enterprises Inc. and Dragados USA, respectively—submitted qualifications for both bored- and immersed-tunnel construction. The Virginia Dept. of Transportation is scheduled to announce the winning bidder early next year, with the four-year construction getting underway in 2020. Skanska and Kiewit had previously teamed with Weeks Marine Inc. to expand the nearby Midtown Tunnel.
