The crane accident that shut down the Tappan Zee Bridge in mid-July drew attention to the weather delays and other troubles besetting Tappan Zee Constructors LLC (TZC) since construction started in October 2013 under its $3.14-billion design-build contract with the NYS Thruway Authority.
For such a large project, however, the six-month schedule slippage appears to be manageable, and a catch-up plan is being executed with the aim of starting toll collections on the new bridge in February 2018.
