Virginia DOT in the coming months will try to thread the needle between its managed lanes concession contracts and the demand from a Northern Virginia state senator for transparency on price and trip times. His legislation is aimed at the privately operated express lanes on I-95/495 and, prospectively, I-66. At a state Senate Transportation Committee hearing early this month, Senator Jeremy McPike, a Democrat, complained about having to pay premium prices of up to $30 to sit in heavy traffic on I-95/495 express lanes. There is no guarantee that the tolled lanes will save time over using the general purpose lanes, he said.
