Recent Federal Highway Administration vehicle miles travelled (VMT) trend reports indicated a 3.9% increase in national miles traveled in first quarter 2015 compared to first quarter 2014. Based on data from 65 facilities in the United States and one in Canada (407 ETR in Toronto), toll roads are showing even stronger growth. The toll road transaction average (weighted by facility VMT) indicated a 5.7% growth in first quarter 2015. VMT growth in 2014 and 2015 has been due mostly to a strengthening economic recovery following the 2008-2009 recession. Growth has also been aided by lower fuel prices since late 2014.
